For many years, politicians and the industry have been working to reduce the harmful emissions from vehicles. The statutory regulations controlling emissions have become gradually more stringent. These limits can simply not be adhered to without a catalytic converter.
In order to ensure optimal operating conditions of the catalytic converter, vehicles have at least one lambda sensor. They regulate the ideal mixture ratio of air and fuel.
Increasingly more vehicles with regulated catalytic converters
Of an estimated 162 million licensed passenger vehicles with a petrol engine in Europe, 135 million are already equipped with a regulated catalytic converter. In addition, more and more motorcycles come with a catalytic converter by standard. That is because their emissions are now also regulated by limits and must be tested at regular intervals.
Increasingly more efficient exhaust air cleaning thanks to the most innovative technology
With its NTK lambda sensors launched in the 1980s, NGK was among the pioneers in this field. Since then, the reduction of harmful emissions has made significant advances, not least due to the development of innovative technologies and extensive research.
Today, highly efficient ceramic heaters in lambda sensors ensure, for example, that the sensors start sooner and respond faster. To achieve more accurate measurements in order to meet the ever more stringent Euro standards, huge efforts are being made in the continuous improvement of the ceramic components. In addition, a number of special sensor types have been developed catering to specific applications. They include broadband sensors and lambda sensors whose electric resistance changes depending on the air fuel ratio.
- Basic exhaust principles: Detailed information about exhaust, lambda regulation and catalytic converters.
- Adapter for lambda sensors: The adapter connects the connection cable of the lambda sensor to that of the engine electronics.
- Diagnosis for lambda sensors: Like every component, the lambda sensor is also subject to a certain amount of wear. This means that performance is diminished over the years.
